To begin making Instant Pot Hamburger Steak I dumped 2 pounds of ground beef into a large mixing bowl.  I used lean ground beef.

I added in some ground mustard, quick oats, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and an egg.

Gluten free bread crumbs can be quite costly so quick oats are a less expensive alternative.

If you have a mixer such as a Kitchen Aid you could blend all the ingredients together quickly.  If not you could do what I did and just get your hands dirty.

Next I formed the meat into patties.

I turned the Instant Pot on to the saute function and added some olive oil.  When it was hot I added the beef patties.

It was a little tricky to flip the patties over but I used two spatulas and that did the trick.  I browned them on the other side.

After both sides were browned I again used the spatulas to remove the patties from the Pot and tranferred them to a plate.

Leaving the saute function on, I added in the sliced onion and mushrooms and cooked until the onions were just starting to soften.

Adding the mushrooms and onion.

I added in some beef broth and used it to deglaze the Pot.

It is very important to remove all the brown bits from the bottom of the Pot so that you do not get the Burn message when the Pot is coming to pressure.

Adding the beef broth.

When I finished deglazing the Pot I put the trivet in and placed the meat patties back in the Pot.

Then I placed the lid on the Instant Pot, turned the steam release handle to the sealing position and set the Instant Pot to Pressure Cook High for 18 minutes.

When the Instant Pot was done cooking,  I turned the steam release handle to the venting position to finish with a quick release.

I transferred the meat patties to a plate and added in 2 packets of gluten free brown gravy mix.

Adding the brown gravy packets.

Using the sauté function again I stirred in the gravy powder and continued to stir until the gravy thickened.

Stirring to thicken the gravy.

  1. It said to add water but did not mention amount so I assumed it was the amount indicated on the gravy packet. After the instant pot was cooking it dawned on me that you should have said beef stock because no where else did it say where to use the beef stock. It sounds like a good recipe but it does need to be corrected.

  2. Can I cut this in half? What amount of fluid would I need? There's only 2 of us, and it's just too much food! Thank you.

    1. Hi Alene,
Yes you can cut the recipe in half. I would use at least one cup of liquid if you have a 6 quart and maybe a bit more with a bigger pot and you will get some moisture from the meat. You can always drain access liquid from the Pot after cooking and reserve a cup of liquid to use with one packet of gravy mix. I often pour out the amount of liquid that I need at the end into a measuring cup, then discard the rest of the liquid and return the liquid I reserved to the Pot to thicken.
      Take care,
      Kathleen
