Seafood Waffles – Gluten Free

Seafood Waffles came about when I was thinking of different ways to make waffles more of a meal.  We often make a maple glaze when we eat salmon so I decided this would also taste great in waffle form.

I use Gluten Free Bisquick because I always have a box in my house.  It is a very versatile mix to keep on hand.

To start I dumped some Gluten Free Bisquick, almond milk, vegetable oil and an egg into a medium sized mixing bowl.

Then I used a large wooden spoon to stir the ingredients together until no lumps remained.

Then I opened two tins of salmon and drained them thoroughly.  I removed all the skin and bones from the salmon before mashing it up.

When the salmon was well separated I dumped it into the waffle batter.

I stirred it in until it was well combined.

Then I added in some grated swiss cheese and stirred until it was integrated into the waffle batter.

When the waffle iron was heated I scooped 3/4 to 1 cup waffle batter onto it.  I can only cook one waffle at a time in my Belgian waffle iron.  You will have to adjust according to the size of your waffle iron.

My waffle iron was set to the darkest setting.  It took about 4 minutes for the ready light to come on.

We were pleasantly surprised at how good these waffles tasted.  We produce our own maple syrup so I am always looking for ways to incorporate it into our meal plans.

Gluten Free Seafood Waffles are a tasty variation to your everyday waffle recipe.  Smother them in maple syrup for the sweet and savoury flavour combination of salmon and maple!

FAQS:

What should I serve with seafood waffles?

Seafood waffles can be a delicious and unique dish to serve for a special occasion or as a creative culinary experiment. Here are some ideas on what to serve with seafood waffles:

  1. Lemon Herb Butter: Offer a side of lemon herb butter or a creamy seafood sauce to drizzle over the waffles. The zesty and buttery flavor will complement the seafood well.
  2. Fresh Seafood: Top the waffles with fresh seafood such as cooked shrimp, lobster, crab meat, or scallops. This will add a rich and indulgent element to the dish.
  3. Salad: Serve a refreshing salad on the side to balance the richness of the seafood waffles. A light mixed green salad with a citrus vinaigrette or a cucumber and tomato salad can be great choices.
  4. Grilled Vegetables: Offer some grilled vegetables like asparagus, zucchini, or bell peppers. The smoky flavor of the veggies will pair nicely with the seafood.
  5. Coleslaw: Coleslaw can provide a crunchy and tangy contrast to the soft and savory seafood waffles.
  6. Remoulade Sauce: Serve a classic remoulade sauce as a dipping option. This French-style sauce with mayonnaise, pickles, capers, and herbs is commonly paired with seafood dishes.
  7. Crispy Bacon: For an extra savory touch, consider adding some crispy bacon as a topping or a side.
  8. Gluten Free Cornbread: Cornbread is a delightful Southern-style addition that can complement the seafood waffles.
  9. Fresh Fruit: Offer a plate of fresh fruit like sliced watermelon, pineapple chunks, or citrus segments. The sweetness of the fruit can balance the savory flavors.
  10. Sparkling Wine or Champagne: For a more upscale dining experience, pair the seafood waffles with some sparkling wine or champagne. The effervescence can enhance the flavors of the seafood.

Remember to serve items that are gluten free and consider any other dietary restrictions or preferences of your guests when planning the accompaniments. With the right combination of sides and sauces, seafood waffles can become a standout dish that everyone will enjoy.

How do I store leftover seafood waffles?

Storing leftover seafood waffles properly is important to ensure their safety and maintain their quality. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to store them:

  1. Cool down the waffles: Allow the seafood waffles to cool down at room temperature for about 1 hour before storing them. This helps prevent condensation and keeps them from becoming soggy.
  2. Divide into portions: If you have a large batch of seafood waffles, consider dividing them into smaller portions. This makes it easier to reheat only what you need later, preventing unnecessary waste.
  3. Wrap individually: Wrap each portion of seafood waffles individually with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This prevents them from sticking together and helps maintain their shape and freshness.
  4. Place in an airtight container: After wrapping, place the individually wrapped portions into an airtight container or a resealable freezer bag. Make sure to remove as much air as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn.
  5. Label and date: Don’t forget to label the container with the contents and date of storage. This way, you can easily keep track of how long they’ve been in the freezer.

When you want to enjoy the leftover seafood waffles:

  1. Reheat: Reheat the thawed seafood waffles in the oven at a low temperature to crisp them up. Avoid using the microwave as it may make them soggy.
  2. Serve: Once reheated, enjoy your delicious leftover seafood waffles!

Remember, when dealing with seafood, it’s essential to follow proper food safety guidelines to avoid foodborne illnesses. If the seafood waffles have been left at room temperature for more than 2 hours or have an unusual smell or appearance, it’s best to discard them to ensure your safety.

Can I freeze leftover seafood waffles?

Freezing leftover waffles is possible, but the results may vary depending on the ingredients and texture of the waffles. Here are some steps to properly freeze leftover seafood waffles:

  1. Allow the waffles to cool: Let the seafood waffles cool down to room temperature before freezing. This helps prevent condensation inside the packaging, which can lead to freezer burn.
  2. Wrap individually: Wrap each waffle individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Alternatively, you can use freezer-safe resealable bags or airtight containers.
  3. Label and date: If you have multiple types of waffles in the freezer, make sure to label each package with the contents and the date so you can keep track of their freshness.
  4. Store in the freezer: Place the wrapped waffles in the freezer and make sure they are stored flat to maintain their shape.
  5. Reheat properly: When you’re ready to enjoy the frozen seafood waffles, preheat your oven or toaster oven to reheat them. This method is likely to yield better results than using a microwave, as it can help maintain the crispness of the waffle.
  6. Serve and enjoy: Once the waffles are heated through, serve them as desired, perhaps with some extra seafood or sauce if you prefer.

It’s essential to note that the quality of the waffles may decline over time in the freezer, so it’s best to consume them within a few months for the best taste and texture.

Please remember to follow food safety guidelines when handling and storing seafood or any other perishable items to prevent foodborne illnesses.
