To begin making this Stove Top Chicken Casserole I put a pot of water on high heat to boil for some gluten free elbow pasta.
Next I put a large frying pan on the stove and turned the heat to medium. I added 8 slices of bacon to the pan.
While the water was coming to a boil and the bacon was cooking, I drained three cans of Flakes of Chicken before dumping them into a mixing bowl.
I added some dried parsley, dried basil, dried oregano and dried sage to the meat in the bowl.
Once the bacon was cooked I patted it with paper towel to absorb the excess grease. I also drained most of the bacon grease from the pan.
I cut up the bacon into small pieces with a pair of scissors.
When the water came to a boil I added in some gluten free elbow pasta and reduced the heat slightly.
While the pasta cooked I used a fork to combine the flaked chicken and spices.
When the pasta was almost done I added baby spinach leaves to the bacon pan on med/low heat. I stirred it while it cooked.
After 7 or 8 minutes I drained the pasta, rinsed it and added it back to the pot with about a tablespoon of olive oil. I stirred to coat. You don’t want the pasta to be too soft because you will continue to heat it later with the other ingredients.
Next I dumped in the prepared chicken, chopped up bacon and a small can of diced tomatoes. I stirred the ingredients together.
Then I added in the cooked spinach, Miracle Whip, salt and pepper.
After stirring in all the ingredients I left it on med/low heat for a couple of minutes to heat through stirring occasionally.
Stove Top Chicken Casserole is loaded with flavour and a variety of ingredients to make it a hearty meal your whole family will enjoy.

FAQS:
What should I serve with stove top chicken casserole?
When serving stove-top chicken casserole, you’ll want to complement the dish with side dishes that balance its flavors and textures. Here are some options to consider:
- Green Salad: A simple green salad with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a light vinaigrette can provide a refreshing contrast to the rich and hearty casserole.
- Steamed Vegetables: Steamed broccoli, green beans, or asparagus can add a healthy and crunchy element to the meal. You can drizzle them with a little olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper for extra flavor.
- Bread: Serve with gluten free rolls or garlic bread.
- Coleslaw: A tangy coleslaw can add a refreshing and slightly crunchy element to the plate. It’s a good choice if your casserole is on the rich side.
- Fruit Salad: A fruit salad with a mix of fresh seasonal fruits can provide a sweet and refreshing contrast to the savory casserole.
- Grilled Corn on the Cob: Corn on the cob can be a great choice, especially if you’re serving the casserole during the summer months. Grilling it adds a delicious smoky flavor.
Ultimately, your choice of side dish will depend on your personal preferences and the specific flavors of your chicken casserole. Consider the overall balance of flavors, textures, and your guests’ dietary preferences when making your selection.
How do I store stove top chicken casserole?
Storing stove-top chicken casserole is important to maintain its freshness and prevent foodborne illness. Here are some steps to properly store your casserole:
- Cooling: Allow the casserole to cool down to room temperature before storing it. Putting hot food directly into the refrigerator can raise its temperature, affecting other items in the fridge.
- Portioning: If you have a large batch of casserole, consider dividing it into smaller portions. This makes it easier to reheat only what you need, reducing the risk of food waste.
- Airtight Containers: Use airtight containers or resealable plastic bags designed for food storage. Make sure there’s not too much empty space in the container to minimize exposure to air, which can cause the casserole to dry out.
- Label and Date: Always label the container with the contents and the date it was prepared. This helps you keep track of how long it has been stored and what’s inside.
- Refrigeration: Place the sealed containers in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking. Chicken casserole should be stored at or below 40°F (4°C) to prevent bacterial growth. Store it on a shelf, not in the refrigerator door where the temperature fluctuates more.
- Reheating: When you’re ready to eat the stored casserole, reheat it in the microwave, oven, or stovetop. Make sure it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to ensure it’s safe to eat.
- Quality Check: Before consuming reheated casserole, check its texture, aroma, and taste. If it looks or smells off, it’s best to discard it.
Remember that food safety is crucial, so always follow these guidelines to ensure that your stove-top chicken casserole remains safe and delicious to eat. Additionally, the recommended storage times for cooked chicken dishes are generally 3-4 days in the refrigerator and up to 3-4 months in the freezer.
Can I freeze stove top chicken casserole?
Yes, you can freeze stove-top chicken casserole. Freezing casseroles is a convenient way to prepare meals in advance and save them for later. Here’s how you can do it:
- Allow the Casserole to Cool: Before freezing, let the chicken casserole cool down to room temperature. This helps prevent condensation inside the container, which can lead to freezer burn.
- Portion the Casserole: You can freeze the entire casserole in one container or portion it into individual servings, which makes it easier to reheat only what you need later.
- Use Appropriate Containers: Use airtight and freezer-safe containers or freezer bags to store the casserole. Make sure to remove as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.
- Label and Date: Clearly label the container or bag with the date of preparation, the name of the dish, and any reheating instructions if necessary. This will help you keep track of how long it has been in the freezer.
- Freeze Quickly: Place the casserole in the coldest part of your freezer and ensure it freezes as quickly as possible. Avoid stacking multiple containers on top of each other until they are fully frozen.
- Reheating: When you’re ready to enjoy the casserole, you can reheat it directly from the freezer. Preheat your oven to the appropriate temperature (usually around 350-375°F or 175-190°C) and bake it, covered, until it’s heated through. Cooking times will vary depending on the size and thickness of the casserole, but it may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or more. You can also reheat individual servings in the microwave if needed.
Keep in mind that the quality of the casserole may degrade slightly after freezing due to texture changes, but it should still be safe to eat if properly stored and reheated. For the best results, try to consume the frozen casserole within 2-3 months.
