Tuna Bakes

Tuna Bakes are an easy, versatile recipe that can be quickly mixed up for a hearty lunch.

Make it gluten free by your choice of bread and you are good to go!

The size of gluten free bread slices vary greatly so the yield for this recipe depends on the size of the bread slices you are using.

This time I used Udi’s bread and was able to make 10 small Tuna Bakes.  When I use Little Northern Bake House bread I might only get 6 or 7 Tuna Bakes.

For those in your house that can tolerate dairy you can top with shredded cheese if desired and turn some into Tuna Melts!

This Tuna Bake recipe is loaded with the salsa of your choice and some green chilies so it can pack a bit of heat if you choose.

To start making Tuna Bakes I sliced up one green onion.

Then I opened two cans of flaked tuna and mashed them up in a small container.

Next I added in some salsa of choice and a bit of Miracle Whip.

After stirring in the salsa and Miracle Whip I threw in a few green chilies, a bit of pepper and the chopped onion I had prepared earlier.

After all the ingredients were well blended I toasted the gluten free bread that I would be using as the base for the Tuna Bakes.

Then I distributed the tuna mixture evenly on top of the slices of toast and spread it out to cover the surface of each piece.

I turned the broiler on and placed the baking sheet with the Tuna Bakes underneath.  When they were slightly browned (about 5 minutes) I removed them from the oven to sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over half of them for the dairy lovers in our home.

If you are not adding the shredded cheese it takes about 7 minutes under the broiler or until the tuna is browned.

I returned the baking sheet to the oven to continue cooking under the broiler until the cheese was melted and bubbling.  About 2 more minutes.

It is very easy to make Tuna Bakes and Tuna Melts with the same recipe and have a variety for your family to choose from.

Tuna Bakes are a healthy and hearty lunch choice for young and old alike!
