Creamed Peas - Dairy Free

To begin making Creamed Peas I quartered some pearl onions.

Then I poured some almond milk into a medium size sauce pan over medium heat.

I added in the cut up pearl onions along with some paprika, salt and pepper.

Next I used a bit more almond milk to mix with Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten Free Baking Flour to make a paste.

I whisked the paste into the warm milk mixture.

I allowed the sauce to thicken and just begin to boil before reducing the heat to simmer and adding a can of drained peas.

I allowed the peas to cook for about 5 minutes in the sauce.

Serve it directly from the stove or transfer the Creamed Peas to a serving dish.

Add a dash of colour to your dinner plate with this creamy side dish.

This dairy free/gluten free recipe still creates a thick creamy sauce, that will also satisfy the taste buds of those who do not have to avoid these ingredients.

Ingredients You'll Need to Make Creamed Peas:

  • ½ cup pearl onions quartered
  • ¾ cup + 2 tablespoon almond milk, divided
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ⅛ teaspoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoon Bob's Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten Free Baking Flour
  • 398ml can peas

How to Make Creamed Peas:

  1. Quarter enough pearl onions to make ½ cup.
  2. Pour ¾ cup of the almond milk into a medium size sauce pan over medium heat.
  3. Add the cut up pearl onions, salt, pepper and paprika.
  4. Mix the remaining 2 tablespoon of almond milk with the 2 tablespoon of gluten free flour to form a paste.
  5. Whisk the paste into the milk mixture in the sauce pan.
  6. Continuing stirring until the mixture thickens and just comes to a boil.
  7. Reduce heat to simmer, drain the can of peas and add the peas to the sauce.  Stir to combine.
  8. Allow the peas to simmer for 5 minutes.
  9. After 5 minutes serve from stove or transfer to a serving dish.
  10. Serve and enjoy!
