To begin I folded up some paper towel and placed it in a glass cake pan.
I stood the turnip on its end on top of the paper towel.
Next I put the turnip in the microwave and cooked it on high power for 10 minutes.
When the microwave was done I turned the turnip onto it’s other end and again cooked for 10 minutes.
While the turnip was cooking I prepared the chunky apple sauce and the crumble topping.
I placed the sliced apples in a microwaveable bowl and added the granulated sugar, water and cinnamon.
Now this can be set aside until the turnip is cooked.
Then I prepared the crumble topping by dumping the flour, brown sugar, margarine and salt into a small mixing bowl.
I used a fork to mix the crumble ingredients together.
Once the turnip was cooked on both ends I removed it from the microwave and allowed it to stand for 5 minutes.
Next I covered the apples with wax paper and put them in the microwave to cook on high for 7 to 9 minutes stirring once.
While the apples finished cooking I cut one end off of the turnip and used two forks to peel the skin down off the turnip.
I turned the turnip over and cut the other end off and finished peeling with the forks.
After peeling I dumped the turnip into a mixing bowl.
I removed the apple sauce from the microwave and mashed it up with a potato masher.
Now I measured out 1/2 cup of the apple sauce and added it to the turnip.
I continued using the potato masher to combine the turnip and apple sauce until no large chunks remained.
Then I sprayed a small casserole dish with cooking spray and layered a third of the turnip on the bottom.
I topped the turnip with half of the remaining apple sauce, about 1 cup.
Now I repeated the layers and ended with a turnip layer.
The last step was to spread the crumble mixture over the last layer of turnip.
I baked the crumble uncovered in the oven for 1 hour at 350F.
After the hour I removed the Turnip Apple Crumble from the oven and served it alongside chicken and stuffing!
