To begin making Rhubarb Sauce I  blended some water and granulated sugar together in a sauce pan over medium heat.

I stirred occasionally until the water came to a boil.

While waiting for the water to boil I had cut some rhubarb up into 1″ pieces.

Once the water and sugar came to a boil I added the rhubarb pieces.

I continued cooking over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

After 10 minutes I turned the burner off and let the mixture start to cool.

It will thicken more as it cools.

Rhubarb Sauce is very tasty on its own..

…or use it as a topping on your next dish of ice cream or even as a cheesecake topping.

Be creative and enjoy the wonderful seasonal flavour of Rhubarb Sauce!

FAQS:

How do I store rhubarb sauce?

To store rhubarb sauce, here are some suggestions:

  1. Refrigeration: If you want to store the rhubarb sauce for a short period, refrigeration is the easiest and most common method. Allow the sauce to cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container, such as a glass jar or airtight plastic container. Make sure the container is clean and dry before adding the sauce. Seal the container tightly and place it in the refrigerator. Rhubarb sauce stored in the refrigerator can typically last for about 1 to 2 weeks.
  2. Canning: If you’re familiar with canning and want to preserve the rhubarb sauce for an extended period without the need for refrigeration or freezing, you can consider canning it. Canning requires proper sterilization and following specific canning procedures to ensure food safety. It’s important to refer to reliable canning resources and follow tested recipes to ensure proper preservation. These resources will provide detailed instructions on canning rhubarb sauce using water bath or pressure canning methods.

Remember to always inspect the sauce for any signs of spoilage before consuming it. If you notice any discoloration, off smells, or unusual texture, it’s best to discard it to avoid the risk of foodborne illness.

Can I freeze rhubarb sauce?

  1. Freezing: If you want to store the rhubarb sauce for a longer period, freezing is a great option. After preparing the sauce, allow it to cool completely. Pour the sauce into freezer-safe containers, leaving some headspace for expansion during freezing. Alternatively, you can use freezer bags specifically designed for liquids. Remove as much air as possible from the bag before sealing. Label the containers or bags with the date and contents. Place the containers or bags in the freezer. Rhubarb sauce can typically be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months.
